About this book

Leonardo has been making people laugh since he was a baby – when the teacher asks him to stop being the class clown, can he do it?

Leonardo has been funny since he was born: he was a funny baby, he was a funny toddler, he was a funny first-grader. But now, his teacher Mrs. Gomez asks him to stop being funny so that the class can learn. He tries his best, but he just has to make a funny face, then tell a funny joke, and then show a funny drawing – with predictable results. And when he finally seriously promises faithfully never to be funny again, he makes the teacher laugh so hard she falls down on the floor laughing!

Behind the scenes

In 2005, two kids sent Robert Munsch a movie that they had made themselves. It was a show about why he should visit San Antonio. He thought it was really neat, and decided to visit their school. While he was there, he went to Mrs. Gomes’s class, which was all in Spanish, and the class tried to teach him the states of Mexico. They had made him an excellent map and a Spanish ABC book, which he got to keep. They had even made him a song about the states of Mexico so he could learn how to say the names right. Then Munsch told some stories and answered questions. A kid named Leonardo asked, “How do you get your ideas?” Munsch said, “I’ll show you.” So he asked the other kids to talk to him about Leonardo till he got an idea for a story. The whole class yelled “CLASS CLOWN!” So Munsch made a story about Leonardo, the class clown.
