About this book
Andrew’s tooth is killing him, but it just won’t fall out. So what do they do? Call the Tooth Fairy, of course!
Andrew bites into an apple and his loose tooth hurts. So his dad tries to take it out with a big pair of pliers, but no luck. So they call the dentist, who tries to pull it out with his car, but no luck. So Andrew’s friend Louis calls the Tooth Fairy. She comes on her motorcycle and tries to pull out the tooth, but no luck. So it’s up to Louis —he uses pepper to make Andrew sneeze the tooth all the way across town.
Behind the scenes
Robert Munsch first told this story in Fort Qu’Appelle, Saskatchewan, to a whole gym full of kids. The Grade 2 class was in the front and lots of the kids were missing teeth, so he made up a tooth story. He says it was not very good, but the kids liked it because they all had loose teeth.
He kept telling it for years and years, and the story got good without him even noticing it. Kids started asking, “When are you going to make the tooth story into a book?” Finally, Munsch decided to really listen to himself while he told the story and was happy to see that the not-very-good tooth story had turned into a really-very-good tooth story — in only ten years!
Munsch decided to use his son, Andrew, in the book. Louis, a friend of Andrew’s, is also in the book. Louis is Greek and said it was OK to use him in the story, but only if Michael Martchenko put a Greek flag on his shirt.
