Privacy Specialist

An opening exists in the Strategic Projects Division for the position of Privacy Specialist reporting to the Director, Strategic Projects & Privacy.

Work Location:  This is a hybrid position. The expectation is for most of the day-to-day work to be done remotely, with in-person attendance at Scholastic Canada’s Toronto and Markham offices for occasional events and training or as projects require.

Primary Responsibilities

Notices, Policies, and Training

  • Developing required public- and employee-facing privacy notices that emphasize clarity and end user accessibility by drawing on legislation, regulator guidance, and best practices as needed.
  • Developing robust internal privacy procedures and best practices for the company and individual business groups as needed.
  • Maintaining and updating privacy policies regularly to reflect any changes in legislation, regulatory guidance, the organization, or its practices.
  • Facilitating regularly recurring privacy training for employees, including subject-specific training (eg. email marketing compliance) for applicable employee groups.
  • Ensuring compliance with all required privacy training and internal policies/procedures.

Inquiries, Complaints, & Incidents

  • Responding to customer requests for access to and correction of personal information and other privacy complaints.
  • Establishing and maintaining a process for documenting and resolving requests for access and/or correction of personal information, privacy complaints, and breaches.
  • Coordinating and communicating with provincial and federal commissions and affected individuals during any investigations related to privacy complaints or breaches.
  • Maintaining a detailed log of privacy incidents, developing metrics and following up on short-term and long-term corrective actions taken by the business

Data Maps & Privacy Impact Assessments

  • Collaborating with technology and business teams to maintain detailed data maps/directories for any processes/systems where personal information is collected or shared.
  • Assess the need for a Privacy Impact Assessment and conducting Privacy Impact Assessments when required, providing guidance to address gaps and overseeing any remediation resulting from such assessments to ensure compliance.
  • Providing leadership to business and technology teams for the development of privacy or privacy-related consent forms, authorization forms, and notices anywhere that personal information is collected across the organization.
  • Working with Software and Technology Services and other business teams to document, review and assess the practices of any third parties who receive or have access to Scholastic-collected Personal Information.

General

  • Keeping up to date on relevant and applicable privacy legislation, regulatory guidance, and cases including undertaking regular, continuing education in the privacy field.

Qualifications

  • A minimum of 3-5 years’ related experience developing and/or leading the full lifecycle of a privacy program.
  • Possesses OR willing to attain an IAPP (CIPM or CIPP-C) designation
  • Highly developed written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to lead with influence outside of direct reporting structures and to clearly explain technical and legal concepts to a variety of audiences
  • Exceptional organizational skills, with a detailed, accurate, and analytical mindset
  • Ability to analyze business needs and develop strategic, integrated recommendations and solutions
  • Self-reliant and autonomous with demonstrated management and leadership skills
  • Ability and willingness to travel amongst Canadian locations and US offices
  • Computer skills: MS Office suite, Jira, Confluence, Google suite.
  • Project management experience an asset

French Publishing Intern

An opening exists in the French Division for the position of French Publishing Intern reporting to French Senior Publishing Manager.

Work Location:  This position works out of our Toronto downtown office located at 604 King St. West. Expectation is that the office is this person’s primary work location, with flexibility for some days at home

Primary Responsibilities

  • Translating various texts into French (novels, documentaries, picture books, advertising pamphlets, letters, catalogues and various other materials for publication)
  • Checking the accuracy of the French translations
  • Ensuring that graphic layouts are consistent
  • Proofreading translated books
  • Drafting short texts for the back cover of books or for the marketing services (catalogues) when needed
  • Drafting the copyright page during the first pass and/or instructions for the graphic designers
  • Checking the changes made by the graphic designers
  • Creating book reports for books presented during the acquisition meetings when requested
  • Digitalizing contracts
  • Other duties as assigned

  • Bilingual in French and English

Marketing Intern (School Markets)

An opening exists in the School Markets Division for the position of Marketing Intern, School Markets reporting to the Specialist, Reading Club Marketing (Print & Email).

Work Location:  This is a hybrid position. The expectation is for most of the day-to-day work to be done remotely, with opportunities to visit Scholastic Canada’s Toronto and Markham offices in person to attend occasional in person events and training.

Role Summary

The School Markets Marketing Intern will assist the Product and Marketing teams fulfill the back-to-school campaigns in English and French for our Book Clubs and Book Fairs divisions.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Editing and proofreading print and digital marketing pieces in English and French.
  • Assisting with quality assurance testing the new Book Fairs Host Hub and Learning Lab.
  • Testing website assets and content in English and French.
  • Supporting with social media content creation.
  • Some administrative tasks and data entry as required.

Qualifications

  • Interest in children’s books, authors, education, and media.
  •  Full professional fluency in English and French

Work Location:  This role is hybrid, requiring virtual and in-office work (at our downtown Toronto location), as projects require.

Web Development Intern

An opening exists in the Creative Services Division for the position of Web Development Intern reporting to Digital Media & Development Manager.

Work Location: This is a hybrid position. The expectation is for most of the day-to-day work to be done remotely, with opportunities to visit Scholastic Canada’s Toronto and Markham offices in person to attend occasional in person events and training.

Role Summary

The Web Development Intern will work primarily with our full stack developer, taking assignments ranging from simple static HTML updates all the way to complex PHP application development and API integration. If applicable, there will be opportunities for the Web Development Intern to support on other projects utilizing any other skills that the intern brings to the role. Additionally, the Web Development intern will be exposed to specific industry best practices in the areas of UI design, accessibility, code maintenance, and testing in addition to building a working knowledge of the publishing world in general.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Working with the Digital Media and Development team to fulfill small development requests
  • Taking on larger self-directed application development projects
  • Attending team and stakeholder meetings with our partner divisions across the company
  • Participating in the life of the company including attending events and participating in educational sessions with industry experts
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Educational background, or equivalent experience in web development (web development, computer science, software engineering, etc.)
  • Approx. 1 year of cumulative work experience
  • Solid skills in PHP, Javascript, Relational Database (MySQL/SQL), HTML & CSS.
  • Experience with Version Control (Github/Bitbucket), AWS, Wordpress/Wpengine, React would be an asset

Education/Publishing Intern

An opening exists in the Education and Publishing Divisions for the position of Education/ Publishing Intern reporting to the Director of Education Publishing & the Publishing Project Manager

Work Location:  This position works out of our Toronto downtown office located at 604 King St. West. Expectation is that the office is this person’s primary work location, with flexibility for some days at home

Role Summary

The Education & Publishing intern will work cross functionally with both the Education and Publishing divisions. The intern will work closely with the Director of Education Publishing as well as the Publishing Project Manager to complete various administrative and editorial work. These tasks include metadata maintenance, creative editorial work, development and tracking of student and teacher print and digital content.

Primary Responsibilities

PUBLISHING:

  • Assisting the Publishing Project Manager with various tasks such as: updating of Master Data Management files for frontlist and backlist titles, completing the Access Copyright Backlist Cleanup, the development of an annual report process for Access Copyright and inventorying and organizing Publishing Archive Library and Lending Library
  • Assisting Designers and the Digital Asset Management team with the collection and archiving of print-ready files of the original print and reprints to ensure easy access to the most recent versions.
  • Assisting the Editorial Assistant with content creation for web projects; award submissions; author and affiliate mailings; and with distribution of in-house copies
  • Assisting Editors by reviewing solicited and unsolicited manuscripts, providing editors with reader responses to these submissions and sending responses to the authors
  • Attending production and editorial meetings as well as publishing/marketing meetings

EDUCATION:

  • Assisting with various developmental tasks such as reviewing manuscript, updating tracking charts, checking editorial and design changes, photo research, production checks
  • Assisting with the maintenance of product support websites (reviewing and updating links, adding new content etc.)
  • Assisting with archiving of print ready files
  • Attending publishing, production, and product specific meetings
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
