When you hear the word democracy, the first thing that you might think of is voting. But civic engagement— working to make a difference in civic life and one’s community—is actually the backbone of a strong and vibrant democracy. If people don’t feel like they have a stake or a voice in public life (or worse, if they don’t care if they do), a democracy isn’t working the way that it should.

Think about your friends and family: are they involved in public life? What is holding them back from contacting their political representatives and participating in councils, public meetings, or community organizations?

One group in Canada is at risk of going without a voice— newcomers. We need to make sure that they are also included in civic life. Organizations and individuals across the country are trying different approaches to get new Canadians involved. These are just a few of their ideas.
