by Jane Mason and Sara Hines Stephens

“Man, you woke up early,” Michael said, stretching his arms as he trotted down the stairs. He plopped down on the sofa next to Chase. “So . . . how was last night?” he asked, giving him a knowing nudge on the shoulder.

“Whaddaya mean?” Chase asked, shooting his friend a sideways look.

Michael could tell he was going to have to spell it out. “Did you tell Zoey you love her?” he asked bluntly.

“No!” Chase replied hotly, sitting up and turning to face his friend. Zoey could be right around the corner! “I’ve told you a thousand times, I’m not telling her,” he said quietly. “Didn’t you read my text message?”

Michael looked confused. “What text message?” he asked.

Uh, hello! “On your TekMate,” Chase said. “The one I sent you after you messaged me.”

Michael shook his head. “You didn’t message me back.” Was Chase losing his mind?

“Yeah I did.” Chase reached over, grabbed his TekMate, and punched a few buttons. His message appeared on the screen. “Look, man, I wrote, ‘For the billionth time, NO. If I tell Zoey I love her, it could wreck our friendship.”

Michael gave Chase a “you are delusional” look. “Uh, I didn’t get that message,” he insisted.

“Well, I sent it,” Chase repeated.

“Lemme see.” Michael leaned over and took the TekMate from Chase. He scrolled through the SENT folder. Uh-oh. Chase sent it all right, but not to him.

“Uh, you didn’t send that message to me,” he said haltingly.

“I didn’t?” Chase asked, confused.

Michael gulped and shook his head. “No.”

“Then who’d I send it to?” Chase wanted to know.

Michael winced. He didn’t exactly want to tell him, but there was no way out of it. “Zoey,“ he said in a small voice.

“Zoey?” Chase repeated. Then the name sank in. “Zoey?!?!?!?!” He grabbed the TekMate to see if it was true. His screen confirmed it. His worst nightmare was a reality.
