It grew colder and suddenly Maddie stopped. It was so sudden that the little unicorn almost crashed into her. Zak began squawking and flapping and Sebastian stopped and looked back to see what the commotion was about.

“What is it?” he said. “What’s wrong?”

“It’s the trees,” said Maddie.

“What’s wrong with ‘em?” muttered Zak nervously.

“They . . . they keep moving or something . . . they shouldn’t because there isn’t any wind.”

“What do you mean, moving?” Sebastian stared round uneasily at the trees, which were so still they appeared motionless.

“I don’t know,” said Maddie. “It’s when we’re walking. It’s almost as if they were creeping nearer. I’m sure the pathway is getting narrower.”

“It’s your imagination,” said Zak, but even he didn’t sound his usual cocksure self.

They carried on but they’d only gone a few more yards when Maddie gave a sudden shriek.

“Oh, for goodness’ sake, what is it now?” squawked Zak, leaping into the air then hovering overhead.

“The branches,” cried Maddie. “Look, they’re like tentacles — I’m sure that one tried to grab hold of me.” She pointed to a long, snake-like branch that trailed across the path.

“I think we are all getting tired,” said Sebastian, “and when you are tired your mind can play funny tricks. I know you need to rest, but I think we’d better press on a bit further.”

The friends gritted their teeth and, trying hard to ignore any terrors that might be lurking amongst the trees, they carried on.

“We know the unicorns came through the forest,” said Sebastian a little later, “so maybe we’ll find some clues to where the yare now.”

But it only grew colder and darker the deeper they went into the forest. Time and again Maddie thought she sensed movements amongst the trees, until at last there came a point when she could bear it no longer. “How much further do we have to go?” she wailed.

“I’m not sure,” Sebastian admitted. “We certainly haven’t seen anything yet to suggest that the herd even came this way.”

“Can’t you use a spell or something to get us out?” Maddie was close to tears. “I think we’re going in circles. That tree we saw just now, I’m sure we passed it before. It was grinning at us.”

“Don’t be silly,” said Zak. “Trees don’t grin.”

“This one did,” choked out Maddie. “It had a face, a horrible face, and it grinned at me, I tell you. I’m cold, Sebastian, I don’t’ like it, I want to go home.”
