Recycle: Make Your Own Paper

What You Need What You Need

  • 5 sheets of used paper (not newspaper or other newsprint)
  • warm water
  • large bowl
  • 6-inch or larger square of screen material (tape the edges)
  • plastic dish pan
  • waxed paper (larger than the screen)
  • sponge or towel

What To Do

1.Tear the paper into pieces about the size of a fingernail. Put them in the bowl and mix with warm water. Let the mixture soak well.

2. Pour the water from the bowl into a blender. Add the soaked paper. Ask an adult to run the blender at medium speed until the paper and water are mush. (Also, have an adult tape the edges of the screen.)

3. Fill the plastic tub about one-third to one-half full with warm water. Pour the blender mush into the water. For a thicker pulp, blend and add more mush. Stir well.

4. Slip the screen in the bowl underneath the pulp. Smooth and shake the pulp evenly over the whole screen. Keep the screen flat as you lift it out. Let the water drain through.

5. Carefully flip the screen, pulp side down, onto a piece of waxed paper.

Draw this symbol to show your paper is recycled. 6. Press a sponge to the screen to absorb water. Squeeze out the sponge, and continue until you’ve removed as much water as possible.

7. Carefully peel the screen off your new sheet of paper. Let it dry overnight.

8. Don’t throw leftover pulp down the drain. It could clog the sink. Use it to make more paper!
