WIND ENERGY: IT'S A BREEZE!

Wind energy can push sailboats across the water, blow your cap off your head or your homework off your desk and across the room. Make a pinwheel to see wind energy at work.

What You Need
  • A 4" x 6" index card cut down to a 4 x 4 square
  • A dowel, wooden chopstick, or other straight wooden stick
  • A thumbtack
  • Pencil
  • Ruler
  • Scissors
instruction guide

What To Do

1. Draw a four-sided star on the cardboard and cut it out.

2. Fold back one edge of each point of the star.

3. Push the thumbtack through the middle of the star into the stick, with the folded edges facing out.

4. Blow your own pinwheel or hold it in the breeze and see it turn.

HOW IT WORKS

The force of the moving air is the energy that pushes the folded flaps, making them move. When there is no moving air to push the flaps, the pinwheel stops turning.
