SOLAR ENERGY COOKS!

Energy from the sun reaches the earth as heat and light. Here’s an experiment that uses solar energy to cook marshmallows.

Carlos and LizWhat You Need

  • Marshmallows
  • Aluminum foil
  • A clean wire coat hanger, straightened out
  • An oatmeal container, cut as shown
  • A hot sunny day

What To Do

1. Cover the inside of an oatmeal container with aluminum foil, shiny side out. Try to keep the foil smooth.

2. Push one end of the coat hanger through one end of the container. Inside, push the coat hanger through two or three marshmallows. Then push it through the other end of the container.

instruction guide3. Place your cooker in a sunny place so that the aluminum foil catches the sun’s rays. Turn the marshmallows every few minutes so they cook on all sides.

4. In a few minutes, you’ll have sticky, gooey roasted marshmallows!

HOW IT WORKS

The curved shape of the oatmeal container and the aluminum foil concentrate and reflect the sun’s heat onto the marshmallows. The heat cooks the marshmallows, just like an oven!
