TRICKY BUTTERFLY HUNT

What You Need

  • Paper
  • Markers or crayons
  • Tape

What To Do

1. Divide up into teams.

2. Each team makes the same number of butterflies or moths out of paper. Cut out butterfly shapes and color them in. Make equal numbers of Hiders, Advertisers and Tricksters:

  • Make some butterflies that will blend in with the walls or floor of your classroom or hallway. These are your Hiders.
  • Make brightly-colored butterflies. These are your Advertisers.
  • Make other brightly colored butterflies and write the letter T on the bottom. These are your tricksters.

3. Teams take turns being the Butterflies or the Hunters. When your team is the butterflies, the Hunters go out of the room. Then you tape your paper butterflies to the walls, floors or desks.

4. When the Hunters return, they must find as many butterflies as they can in two minutes. For each Hider and Trickster they pick up, the get one point. For each advertiser they pick up, they lose a point.

Dorothy Ann5. When the time is up, the two teams switch. The Butterflies become the Hunters and leave the room. Then the new Butterflies hide their paper insects.

Talk About It

How are your paper butterflies like real butterflies? What markings worked best in the game? What markings would work best for real insects? What color does a butterfly need to be to help it hide? Do different markings work for different backgrounds? How does being bright help Monarch Butterfly?
