Dear Literacy Place for the Early Years Teacher,

At a recent LPEY introductory session, teachers examined the newly-created Instructional Flowcharts which help with planning instruction for reading, writing, and working with words (you can download the flow charts in their respective Teaching Support sections: Kindergarten, Grade 1, Grade 2, Grade 3). The reading section of the flowchart outlines LPEY texts suitable for teaching specific comprehension strategies. Generally, there are several options for Shared Reading; however, since each grade of LPEY only contains ten Read Aloud texts, there are fewer choices to use for modelling comprehension strategies. The question arose: Are there other Read Aloud texts that could be used to teach each comprehension strategy?

In the Read Aloud Teaching Plans, you will find several titles listed under the 'Additional Resources' section for each text. Most of these books continue the theme or topic introduced in the original Read Aloud plus they are useful for modelling purposes. An additional list of recommended books is found in the 'Read Aloud' section of the Reading Guide. Remember, books are not the only reading resource; you should include texts from a variety of media. You can share snippets from magazines, flyers, and newspapers, or even from adult non-fiction books.

For texts that are particularly useful when teaching specific strategies, see the charts below. I have included materials that are pertinent to self-monitoring, analyzing, sequencing, and making connections this month and will highlight the other strategies next month.
