Dear Literacy Place for the Early Years Teacher,

One of the questions asked at many in-service sessions is: Do you have a suggested sequence for implementing the LPEY materials?

We are pleased to say that Instructional Flow Charts have been created to assist teachers from Kindergarten to Grade 3. These charts outline a possible sequence for implementing your LPEY resources over the course of the year. The Grade 2 and 3 charts are available on-line in PDF format here on Scholastic Education's website [ED note: Flow charts are now available for K–3]. Scroll down to the section entitled "Now Available" and you will see the charts listed under each grade level. The Kindergarten and Grade 1 versions will be available in the summer of 2010.

The flow chart is based on the teaching of eight comprehension strategies—generally one per month; however, depending on the strategy and the materials available, sometimes, the strategy focus lasts two months. If you follow down the chart, you will see that the topics of Reading, Media Literacy, Working with Words, and Writing have been delineated.

Under each month in the Reading section, there is a comprehension strategy focus. This focus is different at each grade level and progresses over time so that students are learning new pieces about the strategy each year. Within the Instructional Flow Chart one or more texts has been chosen from the Read Aloud collection to help you model the focus strategy. Occasionally, there is a "+" sign beside the book title. This sign indicates you must change the teaching plans when using this text for the particular strategy focus. In the next section, there are several suggested titles for whole group Shared Reading that allow you to involve the students in the focus strategy. Some of these texts have an asterisk beside them to indicate they are "mentor texts" for writing. This means you will introduce the Shared Reading selection before starting the text-type writing study suggested during that month. An important note about the Shared Reading text-it has been purposefully chosen to progress in difficulty over the course of the year so that your class is continually challenged with appropriately levelled materials.

The Working with Words section includes three areas from the Working with Words Guide. The Building Words lessons connect to the Shared Reading selections listed under each month. After introducing the text to students, you can teach the series of lessons linked to a specific word in-context. The Word Solving and Building lessons and the Language Predictability lessons have been selected to progress in difficulty over time.

In the Writing section of the flow chart, the Text-Type Studies have been delineated and linked to a comprehension strategy. As mentioned above, each Text-Type study has a "mentor" or sample text that is introduced to students during Shared Reading. At most grade levels, the year begins with self-selected writing so that students are familiar with this writers' workshop approach. During the year, you will alternate between self-selected writing and text-type studies. Suggestions for Craft and Conventions lessons pertinent to the text-type study are provided.

Hopefully, you will find the Instructional Flow Charts helpful when planning your yearly language program. Remember, you can teach the units in any order that works for you and your students. The Instructional Flow Charts offer one possible suggestion. Have a great summer!
