Dangerous Rivals
Summary:
Shawn Weston, who loves to row and tinker with cars, buys an old truck from the father of a member of the rowing team of a rival school. What starts out as pranks played by rival teams begins to turn nasty as Shawn and his friends are nearly arrested. Finally, their rivals destroy Bayview's boat and members of the Bayview team are injured in a car accident; one nearly loses his life. The members of both teams realize their mistakes, and the Bayview team wins their final race by asking a girl to replace the injured rower.

Before You Read — Pre-Reading

Chapter One—King of the Road
Summary:
Shawn Weston had loved cars since he was a kid. By fourteen he could rebuild an engine. A mistake he made kept him from driving. He saved the money he earned fixing computers. At last he was able to get his driver's license and buy his first vehicle-a beat-up old truck.

Chapter Two—This Means War!
Summary:
Shawn parks his truck at Bayview High School. He brings the repaired computer to Mr. Kennedy and gets paid. While he is in the school, five guys from Lincoln High spray-paint graffiti on the school and a stripe on Shawn's truck.

Chapter Three—Pumping Up
Summary:
Shawn is upset about his truck. Mr. Kennedy and Big Dog reassure him it will be taken care of. Shawn and Big Dog go to work out and watch the girls' basketball team practising. Shawn realizes that Dobson from Lincoln High is one of the guys responsible for the graffiti. He and Big Dog plan revenge.

Chapter Four—Hello, Holly
Summary:
Shawn goes home ready to relax. He forgets about his little brother's soccer game. Holly calls and comes over to check her e-mail on his computer. Shawn warns her about talking online with a stranger. She thinks Shawn is just acting jealous.

Chapter Five—Revenge is Sweet
Summary:
Shawn checks out Dobson on his website and finds out about his family and his schedule. Shawn calls a team meeting and the rowing team meets in this garage. He outlines a plan for revenge.

Chapter Six—The Dead of the Night
Summary:
The rowing team, dressed all in black, takes Smitty's van and head to the Dobson house. They park down the street and sneak up to the house to pull their pranks. They get caught in the act.

Chapter Seven—Way Too Dumb
Summary:
Mr. Dobson and two police officers living down the street notice the guys sneaking around and catch them red-handed. Shawn tells Mr. Dobson why they are at his place. Mr. Dobson finds the spray paint and offers to paint Shawn's truck. The officers lecture the team and let them go.

Chapter Eight—On the Water
Summary:
The rowing team drag themselves to an early morning practice. They all look terrible. Rachel Donahue, their coxie, gives them orders to get their shell on the water and yells so they row as hard as they can. The Coach is not happy with the practice. He tells them to rest on the weekend and not do anything stupid.

Chapter Nine—E-mail Trouble
Summary:
The rowing team reviews its poor practice session and goes over strategies. Shawn is exhausted and sleeps in on Saturday. Holly calls and wants to pick up some blank CDs and check her e-mail at Shawn's house. Her online friend is looking for her and wants to meet at a park. Shawn warns Holly.

Chapter Ten—Out of It
Summary:
Shawn has trouble focusing on his homework. He goes to the mall, watches a basketball game, visits Big Dog and works out. He forgets Stevie's soccer game again and gets there for the last ten minutes. Stevie is mad. Shawn goes home, eats a bowl of cereal and tries to get caught up on his homework. He is falling behind.

Chapter Eleven—The Watcher
Summary:
On Monday night is the rowing semi-finals. The girls' team loses their race but they stay to cheer on the other teams. Lincoln High win their heat. Bayview wins too. Holly gets dragged away by a biker. Shawn and the other rowers come to her rescue. The police check it out.

Chapter Twelve—Bad Medicine
Summary:
Holly realizes she has been foolishly giving too much information to a stranger on the Internet. Shawn gives her a ride home and tells her to be careful.

Chapter Thirteen—You're Out!
Summary:
Shawn's schoolwork is slipping and he knows that his parents expect him to do well. Megan tries to pick up Shawn again. In the cafeteria, Holly corners Shawn to check out plans for the evening. Shawn has forgotten again and makes excuses. Holly yells at him because he's put her last in his life and she calls him a bad friend.

Chapter Fourteen—Paying the Piper
Summary:
Shawn is upset about the fight with Holly. He and Stevie get back on good terms. Shawn's mom talks to him about athletics and academics. She tells him about his college fund. Shawn decides not to call Holly.

Chapter Fifteen—Dude, Where's My Truck?
Summary:
The rowing crew has a good practice, but they are getting nervous. Dana gives Shawn some advice about Holly and tells him about her birthday. When the crew are ready to leave, they hear a noise from their boathouse and see some of the Lincoln crew running away. Their boat has been hit with an axe! Three of the boys grab Shawn's truck keys and give chase. The others hear a loud crash up the street.

Chapter Sixteen—What a Bloody Mess
Summary:
The crew sprint down the road, afraid of what they will see. Shawn's truck is on its roof, the ambulance is there and the Lincoln guys are being questioned by the police. There is blood everywhere! Big Dog is squashed inside the truck. They take everyone to the hospital. Shawn heads to the hospital with the Coach to see who will live and who will die.

Chapter Seventeen—Lights Out
Summary:
Big Dog's parents are at the hospital. He is unconscious and needs tests and surgery. Smitty and James have minor injuries. The Lincoln coach apologizes. Shawn calls Holly and they make up. Shawn waits at the hospital for more news of Big Dog's condition.

Chapter Eighteen—Heavy-Hearted Seven
Summary:
Big Dog's condition is stable but he is unconscious. He has head injuries and a hole in his lung. The doctors are waiting for results of the brain scan. Shawn stays at the hospital. Students at Bayview find out and stop by with flowers, notes and snacks. On Thursday Shawn goes to school but keeps calling the hospital for updates. Shawn finally gets to see Big Dog but he is still in a coma. The rowing team meets. They do not want to row without Big Dog. Dana suggests a substitute.

Chapter Nineteen—It's Alive!
Summary:
Shawn can barely sleep. He decides to stop by the hospital and then go to school. He had forgotten about his truck and takes the bus. When he gets to the hospital, Big Dog is not in his room. Shawn panics and thinks he has died. Big Dog was moved to the third floor and his condition has improved. Shawn sees him out of the coma. Big Dog asks if they have found a replacement for him for the race.

Chapter Twenty—Holly Makes Eight
Summary:
Big Dog wants the team to row without him after all the hard work they have done to prepare. He orders Shawn to find someone. Coach Martins asks Holly to row. The Lincoln coach comes by and gives Bayview their new shell. He tells them that the Lincoln crew is suspended. Bayview wants Lincoln to row and be punished another way. They all agree and the race is on.

Chapter Twenty-One—Going for Broke
Summary:
Bayview reports for the final race. The new shell is awesome and has their name painted on it. Holly is nervous. The race is close and very exciting. Rocky urges them onto a win. They row past a cheering crowd to the trophy and medal presentation. Rachel, the coxie, gets tossed into the water as is the tradition.

Chapter Twenty-Two—One Last Medal
Summary:
After the race, the team packs up the shell into the shed, grabs a bite to eat and heads to the hospital. Big Dog wakes up and gives the high five to everyone. Holly gives her medal to Big Dog-but he insists she keep it. The nurses finally kick them out so Big Dog can rest. Shawn gets an air freshener and stops at the junkyard to salute his truck.
