We would like to thank Kathie Baker, Sonam Gyatso, Tenzin Lhekdup and Tsewang Lhadon for their support; John, Larry and Tim for their guidance; and Lisa Armstrong from the Terry Fox Foundation, for her help with our research.

This book is dedicated to all the children who are inspired by Terry.

Terry Fox has become a great Canadian hero. At the age of 18, Terry was just an ordinary teenager when he lost his right leg to bone cancer. He dedicated the rest of his life to raise awareness and money for cancer research.

Integrity

As a young boy Terry practised hard playing basketball with his best friend, Doug. He never gave up until he made it onto the school team. After Terry lost his leg to cancer, he had to work hard to get used to his new artificial leg.

Perseverance

When he was in hospital getting cancer treatment, Terry met many children with cancer. He knew how they felt and dreamed that there would one day be a cure. Terry decided that he could raise money for cancer research by running across Canada. This was his Marathon of Hope.

Empathy

While running in Ontario, Terry met Greg Scott, a 10 year old fan who also lost his leg to cancer. Terry invited Greg to ride his bicycle beside him for almost 10 kilometres on the Marathon of Hope.

Kindness

Terry wanted to include everyone in his cause. He asked every Canadian to give just one dollar to The Marathon of Hope. He raised money for all kinds of cancer, not just the kind of cancer he had.

Fairness

Terry, and his brother Darrell and his best friend Doug worked together during the marathon. Even when things were difficult they supported one another. They hoped that all Canadians felt like they were part of his team.

Teamwork

During his run across the country, Terry met many different Canadians. Wherever he went, people cheered him on. Terry was becoming a hero.

Respect

Terry showed us all how to get along and work well with others. Today, people around the world are working together to help find a cure for cancer. So far, Terry’s Marathon of Hope takes place in 35 countries and has raised over 400 million dollars.

Co-operation

Each night when Terry finished running, he placed stones on the side of the road to mark his place. This spot would be the place where Terry began to run again the next morning. Near Thunder Bay, Ontario, Terry sadly was forced to quit when his cancer came back. In that spot, a heart-shaped rock as large as a football was found as though he had left his heart behind.

Honesty

When Terry first dipped his artificial leg into the Atlantic Ocean to begin his run, he planned to reach all the way to the Pacific Ocean. He never made it. Terry Fox gave the responsibility to the children of Canada to carry on his Marathon of Hope.

Responsibility

Now it is up to us…
…and to you!
